Marie Lechner (FR) - Vögel als "Umweltmedien": Eine Medienarchäologie des Kanarienvogels

Seit Rachel Carson 1962 einen "stummen Frühling" vorhersagte, hören Ökologen besorgt auf die Vögel. Anstatt den Vogelgesang als Stimme einer hypothetischen "Natur" und als Symbol für verlorene Harmonie zu betrachten, befasst sich dieser Vortrag mit der "Musik", die Vögel, Menschen und Maschinen gemeinsam machen, wobei der künstliche Gesang von Kanarienvögeln als Beispiel dient. Ausgehend von den Forschungen von Jacob Smith und seinem in Eco-sonic Media entwickelten Begriff der "Vogelmedien" werden wir die Geschichte dieser Hausvögel nachzeichnen, die von Menschen trainiert wurden, um Jahrzehnte vor der Erfindung und anschließenden Verbreitung von Haustechnologien wie dem Phonographen, dem Grammophon und dem Radio für akustische Unterhaltung im Haushalt zu sorgen.

Marie Lechner ist Kuratorin, Autorin und Dozentin. Als ehemalige Journalistin bei Libération war sie für Kulturprogramme bei La Gaîté Lyrique (Paris) verantwortlich, insbesondere für Le Laboratoire, eine Erkundung der Schnittpunkte zwischen Kunst, Technologie und sozialen Fragen. Sie hat mehrere Ausstellungen bei La Gaîté Lyrique (Paris), HMKV (Dortmund), MU (Eindhoven), der Biennale internationale du design (Saint-Etienne) und dem NRW Forum (Düsseldorf) mitkuratiert. Ihre jüngste Ausstellung trägt den Titel House of Mirrors: AI as phantasm, im HMKV (Dortmund) (mit Inke Arns und Francis Hunger). Derzeit lehrt und forscht sie zu digitaler Kultur und Medientheorie an der École supérieure d'art et de design in Orleans und an der Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris.

Marie Lechner - Birds as "environmental media": a mediarchaeology of the canary

Ever since Rachel Carson predicted a 'silent spring' in 1962, ecologists have listened anxiously to birds. Rather than seeing birdsong as the voice of a hypothetical 'nature' and a symbol of lost harmony, this talk looks at the 'music' that birds, humans and machines make together, using the artificial song of canaries as an example. Drawing on the research of Jacob Smith and his notion of 'bird media', developed in Eco-sonic Media, we will trace the history of these domestic birds trained by humans to provide audio entertainment in the home decades before the invention and subsequent proliferation of domestic technologies such as the phonograph, gramophone and radio.

Marie Lechner is a curator, author and teacher. A former journalist at Libération, she was in charge of cultural programs at La Gaîté Lyrique (Paris), notably Le Laboratoire, an exploration of the intersections between art, technology and social issues. She has co-curated several exhibitions at La Gaîté Lyrique (Paris), HMKV (Dortmund), MU (Eindhoven), the Biennale internationale du design (Saint-Etienne) and NRW Forum (Düsseldorf). Her latest exhibition is entitled House of Mirrors: AI as phantasm, at HMKV (Dortmund) (with Inke Arns and Francis Hunger) She currently teaches and researches digital culture and media theory at the École supérieure d'art et de design in Orleans, and at Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris.
