Yara Asmar ist eine Musikerin und Puppenspielerin aus Beirut, Libanon. In ihren Musikstücken und live Auftritten kommen unter anderem Akkordeon, Metallophone und Elektronik zum Einsatz. Bei ihrer Arbeit während ihres zweimonatigen Residenzaufenthaltes bei Global Forest steht das Bauen von Puppen, die Herstellung von Tonbandschleifen und Field-Recordings im Wald im Vordergrund. Während des Festivals wird sie folgende Projekte zeigen:
SONATINA FOR 19 MUSIC BOXES
Performance
Eine Performance für Akkordeon, Metallophon und Elektronik. Yara Asmar komponiert Musik für 19 Spieldosen, die von Besuchern als Auftakt für ihre Performance (mit)gespielt werden.
THE CUT-THROAT FINCH PRELUDES
Sound installation
Yaras Großvater hat vor dem Beginn des libanesischen Bürgerkriegs einige Ersparnisse zusammengetragen, um sich einen 4-Spur-Rekorder zu kaufen. Mit diesem hat er verschiedene Vogelstimmen auf Band aufgezeichnet. Als der Krieg begann, hatte er bereits fast 600 Vögel aufgenommen, und auf seinem Dachboden lagerte er stundenlange Aufnahmen von Vogelstimmen. Einer seiner Lieblingsvögel, den er aufnahm, hieß المذبوح (der Kehlkopffink), was wörtlich übersetzt "der Geschlachtete" bedeutet. Als der Krieg begann, starben die Vögel, vor allem wegen der lauten Geräusche. "The cut-throat finch preludes" ist eine sich langsam zersetzende Bandschleifeninstallation von im Schwarzwald aufgenommenen Vogelstimmen.

Im Wald, zwischen den Baumstümpfen und unter den Moosteppichen, verstecken sich seltsame Kreaturen: Fohrenwichtel, hölzerne Riesen und mechanische Vögel. Diese Installation ist ein kleines Universum in einem Raum und zeigt diese Kreaturen und Tagebuchauszüge, welche die zufälligen Begegnungen mit ihnen dokumentieren.
YALA TNAM
Guiness Buch der Rekorde Rekord
Im Rahmen ihrer Musikboxen Serie programmiert Yara Asmar eine 50 Meter lange Rolle aus Lochpapier, auf der das libanesische Wiegenlied "Yala Tnam" am Sonntag Morgen um 10 Uhr etwa eine Stunde lang in einer Schleife gespielt wird. Mit dieser Länge plant sie den aktuellen Rekord von 30 Metern im Guiness Buch der Rekorde zu brechen. Unterstützt wird sie hierbei u.a. vom Deutschen Phonomuseum St.Georgen.

The residency artist Yara Asmar is a musician and puppeteer from Beirut, Lebanon. She incorporates accordion, metallophones and electronics into her musical work. Her work during the two months residency at Global Forest will revolve around building puppets, making tape loops and field-recordings in the forest. At the festival she'll present the following works:
SONATINA FOR 19 MUSIC BOXES
Performance
A performance for accordion, metallophone, electronics. Yara composes music for 19 music boxes to be played by members of the audience as an opening piece for the performance.

Sound installation
Before the Lebanese civil war began, Yara's grandfather had gathered up some savings to buy a 4-track reel to reel recorder onto which he went on to record the sounds of different birds. By the time the war started, he had already recorded the sounds of almost 600 birds, and in his attic he stored reels and reels of hours of bird song recordings. One of his favorite birds to record was called المذبوح (the cut-throat finch) which literally translates to “the slaughtered”. Once the war started, the birds started dying, mostly because of the loud noises. ‘The cut-throat finch preludes’ is a slowly decomposing tape loop installation of bird songs recorded in the Black Forest.

There are strange creatures hiding in the forest, inside the tree stumps and below the carpets of moss: Pine wisps, wooden giants and mechanical birds. A tiny universe inside a room, this installation features these creatures and diary excerpts that document the chance encounters with them.
YALA TNAM
Guiness book record break
As part of her jukebox series, Yara Asmar is programming a 50-metre roll of perforated paper to play the Lebanese lullaby "Yala Tnam" on a loop for about an hour starting on Sunday 10am. With this, she plans to break the current record of 30 metres in the Guinness Book of Records. The German Phonomuseum in St.Georgen will support her in this endeavour.
